Ranks

Ranks

General

Newcomer: This is the rank that everybody starts off as when first joining Atlantis, and simply means that your character is not considered to be an official citizen yet. After you have had your Advancement Application accepted, however, you will choose to be either an Atlantean citizen or a registered Etrani.

Etrani: Whether your character is newly arrived off the boat from some distant land or has lived on the island all his/her life, he/she is still considered by the government to be an “Etrani”; that is, someone who is permitted to reside on Atlantis but is not of Atlantean heritage. Needless to say, many of the Etrani whose families had lived on Atlantis for generations are angry that they were not considered to be officially “Atlantean,” and resent the supposed “true-blooded” islanders for it.

Atlantean: Very proud of their heritage, the average Atlantean can trace his/her family tree back for generations. Having lived on the island for millennia uncounted, the Atlanteans are firmly rooted to their island and go to great lengths to keep their blood “pure”: marriage between foreigners and Atlanteans is punishable by death, and even excess interaction between the two groups is frowned upon, and is therefore kept clandestine.

Special

Council of the Light: While there is no one ruler of Atlantis, the Council of the Light is formed of five Atlantean citizens who collaborate on making decisions about the laws of the city and its foreign policy. Individual Council members hear petitions and may bring issues they feel to be valid up with their fellow members, and the entire council may turn out to judge on major trials. The Council also consults often with both the High Priest and Priestess and with the Spirit of Atlantis.

Becoming a Council member: To be considered for this position, you must be an Atlantean citizen—not an Etrani. You must also have completed at least 10 posts as a full member, meaning that with your Newcomer 5 you must have a minimum of 15 posts. You must also be in good standing within the site and proven yourself as a responsible, active member and able writer. If you are interested in this position, please PM Sayana with your desired position and a reason as to why you believe you would be a good choice.

High Councilor: An elected position, the High Councilor acts as the “voice” of  the Council and has great power within it. While traditionally this post was associated with international affairs, this is no longer necessarily the case.

Becoming the High Councilor: This is an elected position. Elections may be held once there are at least three Council members.

Council of the Sun: Based on the model of the Atlantean Council of the Light, the Council of the Sun is run by five Etrani. While it is not recognized by the Atlantean government as being an official group, its councilors are highly influential in the Etrani community and often acts as the Etranis’ “voice.” Its members advocate an Etrani rebellion, and therefore face execution if their identities become known to the Atlanteans.

High Councilor: An elected position, the High Councilor acts as the “voice” of the Council and has great power within it.However, as the most powerful member of the Council of the Sun, the High Councilor also has the highest price on his/her head and is constantly being sought by the Atlantean government.

Becoming the High Councilor: This is an elected position. Elections may be held once there are at least three Council members.

Servants of the Temple: The Temple is the center for religious life in Atlantis, and has begun—especially in recent years—to take power on the political scene as well. Upon first joining, Servants will be novices and take lessons from various mentors from the Temple until they feel they are ready to prove their skills to either the High Priest, High Priestess, or both together. At the end of the test, the High Priest/Priestess will pronounce judgment as to whether the novice will become a full Priest or Priestess or continue his/her training as a novice.

Becoming a Servant of the Temple: Post in the “Joining the Temple” board and the High Priest or Priestess will roleplay with you and declare whether or not you are worthy to enter the Temple and become a novice. You may be either Atlantean or Etrani.

High Priest and Priestess: The twin authorities on all religious matters and many political ones, the High Priest and Priestess are also the leaders and, in many ways, the lifeblood of the Temple. They choose novices, have the power to elevate these novices to full Priests and Priestesses and, in rare cases, may even throw a Servant out of the Temple for misconduct.

Becoming the High Priest/Priestess: To be considered for this position, you must have completed at least 10 posts as a resident or citizen, meaning that with your Newcomer 5 you must have a minimum of 15 posts. You must also be in good standing within the site and proven yourself as a responsible, active member and   able writer. If you are interested in this position, please PM Sayana with your desired position and a reason as to why you believe you would be a good choice.

Spirit of Atlantis: The Spirit of Atlantis is believed to be the soul of Atlantis personified, reincarnated through generation after generation. When the old Spirit dies, every Atlantean child under ten is tested by the High Priest and Priestess using very secret methods to determine which child carries the soul. This child will then grow up in the Temple and be trained by the Priests and Priestesses. Though it is forbidden to speak as such, many now believe that the Spirit is a political appointee, rather than a religious one. As the only public appearances the Spirit makes is in costume with and covered with makeup and various alternating masks, the Spirit’s identity is generally unknown.
